Historical Western Romance

Sarah Kerry's world is shattered when a man from her past, Liam Devlin, shows up with proof that, if shared, would send her father to the noose. In order to keep Liam quiet, she must break her young courtship with Michael Lonnigan and marry Liam instead.

Michael is crushed and angry when Sarah abruptly ends their courtship, but he knows something isn’t right. He's seen the new man hanging around the Kerry family and believes the man is blackmailing the woman Michael loves. Unwilling to let her go, Michael will do whatever it takes to save Sarah and make her his own.

Tugging on his vest, Michael rolled his shoulders and set out to fulfill his purpose for tonight. Find Sarah. Discover what was wrong. Fix it. Marry her.

Urgency melded with anxiety as the difficulties seemed too numerous, but he had to squelch any uncertainty. Sarah needed him, and he would do his damndest to free her.

He scanned the building, looking over the dancers, and froze when he found her in the arms of the stranger from church. A short man, slim and oily. Michael wondered how this fool could imprison Sarah so effortlessly. His frail form spoke of a man unused to hard labor. His hair was dark and slicked back. Had he used lard to comb his hair? Disgust overruled the anxiety sitting in Michael’s gut.

Determined, he waited for the reel to end then went up to the couple while everyone clapped their appreciation. Sarah saw him before the fool did, and she paused as her eyes widened. He didn’t want to scare her, but it didn’t make him change course. Stopping next to them, he used his height to his advantage and towered over the ridiculous fop monopolizing Sarah’s time.

The fool gazed up at him, his eyes round with what Michael hoped was fear and panic. Perhaps the little weasel would scurry away. Michael took a step closer, almost challenging the man right there in the middle of the dance floor.

He turned to Sarah. “May I have the next dance?”

Her gaze wavered and filled with tears. “No, thank you.”

Shock sliced his heart. No? He swallowed as his pulse began to race with fear. Damn it. “Perhaps later?”

She blinked rapidly, clearing her eyes, then put her shoulders back. “Thank you for your interest, but I have a partner for the evening.”

The breath whooshed out of him. His heart dropped to his toes. She’d meant those gut-wrenching words she’d spoken that day at the river. Their young courtship was over. But why?
REVIEWS FOR SAVING SARAH
"I LOVED this little novella by Kara O'Neal! I guess, as a Western, it's not surprising that, despite being short, it packs a punch. As usual, Kara O'Neal manages to create genuine conflict and angst. You feel her characters' problems and believe that there is no way out, but in Pike's Run, love always wins. It's such a pleasure to watch these characters grow up and see their lives drawn in the subsequent stories. I just can't read fast enough! I highly recommend this series!"

"Although the length is short, the story bursts with emotion. What is more heartbreaking than not being with the one you love? Ms. O’Neal provides an impossible situation thwarting young people who want desperately to plan a future but a major issue stands in their way. Michael is a great hero, supportive and protective of Sarah’s needs. Sarah is loyal and loving to her family. Wonderful characterizations (including the secondary characters) swept me into their trauma and I needed to know how their problem would be resolved. A great start to a western historical series."
